Apple is gearing up to upgrade its Apple Watch lineup by adding 5G connectivity, marking a significant shift from the 4G LTE that has been in place since the Series 3 launch in 2017. According to a report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, this move is expected to bring enhanced speed and efficiency to the popular wearable.
As part of the upgrade, Apple plans to switch from Intel to MediaTek as the supplier for its modems in cellular Apple Watch models. The new MediaTek modems will support 5G Redcap, a special version of 5G designed for wearables and other low-power devices that don’t need high-speed data connections. This change could significantly improve connectivity while maintaining or even enhancing battery life, as 5G Redcap is designed to consume less power than standard 5G.
While 5G typically consumes more power, leading to higher energy consumption and device heat, the 5G Redcap's power efficiency could give Apple Watch users the best of both worlds: better battery life and faster speeds compared to the current 4G LTE.
Additionally, Gurman hints that the upcoming Apple Watch Ultra 3 could feature satellite texting for off-grid communication and blood pressure tracking, alongside the 5G upgrade. However, these features remain unconfirmed until Apple makes an official announcement.
This shift to 5G marks another step in Apple's ongoing commitment to improving its wearable devices and offering enhanced functionality to users.
