Google has officially launched Gemini 2.0, the latest and most advanced version of its AI model, offering exciting new capabilities in image, audio, and text processing. Following OpenAI’s public release of its o1 model, Gemini 2.0 takes a major leap forward in the AI race, with a preview available today for users to experience its power firsthand.

What’s New with Gemini 2.0?

In a blog post by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the company revealed that Gemini 2.0 is its most capable AI model to date. The model introduces native support for both image and audio output, marking a significant expansion in its functionality. Pichai emphasized that Gemini 2.0 will help build smarter AI agents that bring Google closer to its vision of creating a "universal assistant."

Rather than launching the most advanced version, Gemini 2.0 Pro, immediately, Google is starting with Gemini 2.0 Flash. This more efficient version is available to all Gemini users right now, with a mobile app rollout coming soon. Users can access it by selecting Gemini 2.0 from the dropdown menu in the Gemini web client.

Enhanced Search and AI Overviews

Google’s focus moving forward is to integrate Gemini 2.0 into its Search features, starting with AI Overviews. This new feature will help users tackle more complex queries, including multi-step math and coding problems. Google also plans to expand AI Overviews to more countries and languages in the near future.

Project Astra and Other Innovations

Gemini 2.0 is already enhancing Google’s ambitious AI projects, including Project Astra, a multi-modal AI agent. Thanks to the improvements in Gemini 2.0, Astra can now converse in multiple languages, seamlessly switch between them, and remember information for longer periods. It also offers better latency and access to powerful tools like Google Lens and Maps.

Performance and Benchmarking

Gemini 2.0 Flash significantly outperforms its predecessor. It scored 63% on HiddenMath, a benchmark that evaluates AI’s ability to solve advanced math problems, compared to the previous model's score of 47.2%. Interestingly, the experimental version of Gemini 2.0 even outperforms Gemini 1.5 Pro in several areas, though it still lags in long-context understanding and automatic speech translation.

To address this, Google has introduced Deep Research, a new tool that leverages the long-context strengths of Gemini 1.5 Pro to write in-depth reports on complex subjects.

Looking Ahead

With Gemini 2.0, Google is solidifying its position as a leader in the AI race, bringing new advancements not just for Search but across a range of innovative projects. As the company continues to refine and expand its AI capabilities, users can expect even more powerful tools and features in the near future.
